Clove? In cookies? Yes, you hard it right. As the name suggests, these clove chocolate chip cookies are infused with the warmth of cloves. I have always loved using spices in my bakes and this is no different. Crisp and delicious, this cookie recipe was created more than a dozen years ago and come from ‘the notebook’ (click here to find out what I am referring to).
The recent barrage of disappointing news from India in relation to the ongoing pandemic has somewhat been hitting closer to home. People not related by blood but more than family, being cruelly snatched away from this world way too soon; another incident of both parents passing away leaving behind two distressed and very young kids; examples of just a few of such news that does distract the mind! Can’t take anything for granted; so trying to keep sane, get the mojo back and get on with it. Life is too precious to waste any time. Hoping and praying that we can all find some peace in the midst of it all. Meanwhile, I am trying to find some solace in nature as my little garden is slowly coming back to life!
Cloves-
Coming back to the recipe for today, as I mentioned earlier, ground cloves have been used in this recipe to lend their flavour to these delicious cookies. Cloves are the aromatic dried flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae. They are native to Indonesia and used as a spice in cuisines all over the world. Cloves also have medicinal properties, considered very effective in relieving toothaches and coughs…more info on cloves -wiki. It has been said that the Chinese wrote of cloves as early as 400 BC. and there is a record from 200 BC of courtiers keeping cloves in their mouths to avoid offending the emperor while addressing him! There you go! That’s some trivia for you!
Flattening the balls of cookie dough-
I slightly flattened the balls of dough. Then, with a skewer, pressed lines on top, further flattening them. I tried it with the back of a greased fork, but the mixture kept sticking to it; the skewer worked.

Clove chocolate chip cookie
Ingredients
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 2½ tbsp cocoa powder
- ⅓ tsp bicarbonate of soda
- a handful of white chocolate chips
- 1 tsp ground cloves (not heaped, or else will be too strong)
- 3 tbsp dark brown sugar
- 2 tbsp black treacle
- 3 tbsp oil
- 1 egg
Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, soda, ground cloves and chocolate chips.
- In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, oil, sugar and black treacle.
- Make a well in the centre of the flour mixture and tip in the egg mixture.
- Fold in till everything comes together…can use fingertips.
- Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill for 20 minutes.
- Pre heat the oven at 180 deg C and line a baking tray.
- Make 14-15 balls from the mixture and place them a little apart on the lined tray. Slightly flatten the balls and with a skewer, press lines , further flattening them (I first tried it with the back of a greased fork, but the mixture kept sticking to it).
- Place the tray in the centre of the pre heated oven and bake for 12-13 minutes.
- Cool on the tray for a minute and then transfer to a rack to cool completely.
