Slightly sweet and slightly hot, and with a little bite to them, this pear bhaji is ready in minutes and is a great way of using this beautiful fruit in a savoury dish. This recipe is vegetarian / vegan friendly too!
The pears have come and the pears have gone; but I couldn’t make anything with them. All four of us absolutely love munching on this fruit, and before I could figure out something, batches of them had already disappeared. The fruit bowl was once again filled with pears, but, yet again, was doing the disappearing act quite fast. But, this time I was determined and managed to grab hold of some of them and make something other than a sweet treat.
So this simple pear bhaji (bhaji- dry, spiced and stir fried vegetable dish; in this case, I’ve used a fruit in the same way) was rustled up; nothing fancy, just a simple fry. But, what a fry; I really seem to have fallen in love with it.
It was ready in minutes and tasted quite good, I must say. The slight hints of spice went quite well with the fruit and we relished it. The pears had a little bite to them which we like. They were slightly sweet and slightly hot. We had ours with some roti.

Pear bhaji
Ingredients
- 4-5 small, firm pears, cut into small pieces (I kept the skin on and washed the whole pears really well before cutting). Remove the seeds and the core.
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 tbsp oil (I used vegetable)
- ¾ tsp paas puron / panch phoron (a spice mix of equal parts of fenugreek, nigella, mustard, fennel and cumin seeds)
- 1 whole dried red chilli
- 1 whole bay leaf
- salt to taste
- a pinch of sugar
- ½ tsp freshly roasted and ground cumin
- ⅓ tsp turmeric powder
Instructions
- Heat the oil and add the panch phoron, bay leaf and whole red chilli.
- When the seeds begin to pop, add the pears and onion.
- Add the pinch of sugar and season with salt.
- Stir well and cook covered low heat for 6-7 minutes, stirring after every 2 minutes.
- Add the turmeric and cumin, and cook, stirring constantly for another 2-3 minutes.
- Remove from heat and serve hot as a side dish with rice or rotis / puris.
